The Pittsburgh Steelers backfield is trending in an explosive direction. Following a standout performance from the running back tandem of Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle in their 16-10 win over the New Orleans Saints, head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that the ground game is about to become an even bigger focal point of the offensive strategy moving forward.
In his weekly press conference, McCarthy was asked about the running backs' dominant performances. In a social media post by Nick Farabaugh, McCarthy told the media that he recognizes just how critical those two were to the game's success.
"Mike McCarthy says 'Jaylen Warren is as hot as a firecracker' and with how he and Rico Dowdle have been playing, he wants to run the ball even more
than they did last week. He likes how the split and usage broke down to be this week among the two backs, too. They had a combined 36 touches this week," shared Farabaugh on X.

That seal of approval comes on the heels of a dominant outing where Warren and fellow back Dowdle completely controlled the tempo of the game. Together, the dynamic duo handled an impressive 36 combined touches, showcasing a complementary skill set that kept opposing defenses completely off-balance.
Rather than relying on a traditional bell-cow approach, the coaching staff appears to have unlocked a highly effective rhythm by rotating the ball carriers. Keeping both players fresh allows them to maintain a relentless, high-energy rushing attack deep into the fourth quarter.
For an offense looking to control game flow, wear down opposing defensive lines, and protect the passing game, establishing a physical identity on the ground is paramount. If Warren and Dowdle can sustain their current momentum, this two-headed monster in the backfield will dictate the terms of engagement for weeks to come, giving opposing coordinators a massive headache as they try to scheme against a relentless rushing attack.
