For the Pittsburgh Steelers, defining an offensive identity has proven tricky. Yet, amidst early-season volatility, one player has emerged as the clear focal point of the unit, running back Jaylen Warren.
Warren entered the season splitting backfield reps with Rico Dowdle, who suffered an injury in Week 2. However, Warren’s explosive playmaking ability has quickly set him apart as the roster's most lethal weapon.
On a recent crossover episode of “Locked on Steelers,” host Christopher Carter pointed to Warren's consistency as the catalyst Pittsburgh must lean on.
"These are two running backs that are very explosive,” said Carter. “Everyone knows about Jonathan Taylor. He's been a star in the NFL for some years. Jaylen Warren has been that guy that Steelers
fans have been waiting to see kind of have his breakout moment.
“Last year he became the starter, but he kind of had to split the backfield with Kenneth Gainwell. these early weeks, Jaylen Warren's kind of been the best player on the Steelers offense. He's been getting after it."
What elevates Warren beyond a traditional runner is the perfect alignment of his skill set with Pittsburgh's newly reconstructed offensive line. Up front, the young, athletic interior, featuring Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier, and Mason McCormick, excels when pulling and blocking in open space.
When offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio designs perimeter concepts, Warren's vision and burst turn moderate gains into home-run plays. Carter detailed how this dynamic unlocks the entire offense.
"Warren is explosive in space. And to me, the thing that best challenges teams right now when the Steelers face them is when they get their running run game out in space,” added Carter. “Their linemen, they're guys that love to move. Zack Frazier, Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick, even Max Iheanachor, the rookie that they drafted. These are guys that are athletic. They like to run and block in space and that allows them to kind of get things going."
To establish consistency, Pittsburgh doesn't need to overcomplicate its scheme. By getting Warren into space behind their athletic front, the Steelers have an engine ready to power their offense.
