When Aaron Rodgers joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, expectations soared across the franchise. But for the defense, sharing a building with a 42-year-old, future Hall of Fame quarterback presents a unique daily challenge.
Appearing on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” 26-year-old Steelers linebacker Payton Wilson opened up to host Kyle Brandt about what it’s really like working alongside the league's oldest active player. Far from an intimidating presence, Wilson described Rodgers as an incredibly accessible teammate who has seamlessly integrated into the team's culture.
“It’s been nothing but great,” Wilson shared. “He has been as humble as they come for a guy of that stature ever since he got here. Willing to help anyone that asks. I think
he’s a great teammate; he’s great in the building. His knowledge of the game has been great to everyone. He doesn’t carry himself in any sort of way that makes him unapproachable.”

While Rodgers’ approachable demeanor has won over the locker room, facing him on the practice field remains a trial by fire for Pittsburgh's defensive unit during OTAs, training camp, and now practice. Trying to disguise coverages against one of the sharpest minds in football history forces young defenders to adapt quickly or risk getting repeatedly exposed.
“At first it’s tough,” Wilson admitted. “If you approach it the wrong way he’s gonna get you more than you’re going to get him. When you’re in certain coverages and stuff he’s doing a lot of things that other quarterbacks aren’t doing. So, for me practice, our day in and day out is almost harder than when we get to Sunday.”
Ultimately, Wilson sees the intense reps against Rodgers as an invaluable shortcut toward accelerating his own development. By facing the ultimate test throughout the week, Pittsburgh's defense enters game days equipped with sharper instincts and heightened preparation.
