During his prime with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Antonio Brown established himself as the premier wide receiver in the NFL. But behind the scenes, former Steelers safety Ryan Clark saw the seeds of future turmoil being planted long before Brown’s public breakdown and eventual departure from Pittsburgh.
Appearing on the “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” podcast with current Steelers captain Cameron Heyward, Clark reflected on the locker room dynamics surrounding Brown’s rise to stardom.
Heyward recalled Clark’s immediate, emotional reaction the day Pittsburgh signed Brown to his first major contract extension. He shared a story about how Brown had said something to former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, and the defense, including Clark, did
not take kindly to it.
He recalled how emotional Clark became when he heard that Brown had been paid. Heyward asked Clark if he remembered what he said in response.
“Yeah, he’s gonna F it up,” said Clark. “The entire Antonio Brown thing, just makes me sad, you know, how it played out.”
For Clark, the issue was never about Brown’s talent, but how wealth would amplify his underlying personality traits. While working in media during Brown’s peak, Clark initially abstained from sharing private locker room details.
"The entire time I was on TV and he was AB. For six years, the best we'd ever seen at the position. It didn't matter that I knew the things I knew. Because it had nothing to do with football, nothing to do with my job," Clark explained.
However, as Brown's behavior began impacting on-field operations, Clark felt compelled to speak openly on ESPN.
"So when it all came to a head and I was sitting on 'SportsCenter' and I was like well this is kind of who he's always been right like you knew this was coming," Clark said, recounting what he told team figures years earlier. "I told the story of the day I knew they were going to sign him and he was walking and I was like man I was like once y'all give him money y'all will not be able to control him."
Unfortunately, Clark’s predictions seemed to come true. Brown’s time in Pittsburgh was not only cut short, but so was his time in the league. It left fans wanting more and wondering what might have been.
