The Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. find themselves at an impasse. Addressing the situation on “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter outlined the friction keeping the young defensive star off the field.
A combination of conditioning concerns, an ongoing back injury, and contract disputes has derailed Porter’s start. After missing summer practice, rushing into action carries immense physical and financial risk.
"He’s had the back issue all summer long. He hasn’t practiced,” Schefter noted. “They wanna be smart, and I’m sure, let’s be honest, that he wants to be really smart about it being that he doesn’t have the deal he wants."

The core disagreement appears to revolve around market evaluation. A surging cornerback market saw stars like Denzel Ward, Christian Gonzalez, and Devon Witherspoon earn massive paydays north of $30 million annually. Porter believes his value reflects that elite tier, but Pittsburgh’s front office remains hesitant to stretch beyond Patrick Surtain II’s $24 million threshold.
Schefter highlighted this gap: "It leaves the two sides in a difficult spot where they’re trying to find a common ground and haven’t come close to doing it yet, and he’s not playing."
With extension talks stalled, Pittsburgh has entertained external options. However, finding a suitor willing to match the Steelers' asking price while agreeing to Porter’s contract demands has proven difficult.
"The Steelers have been open to listening to trade offers. So far, for what they would want back, there has not been a lot of trade interest. I don’t know what would spur that right now. It’s evolving, let’s see where it goes,” added Schefter.
For now, the situation remains in limbo, leaving Pittsburgh’s defense waiting to see if a resolution or a trade emerges first.
