When an elite young talent forces an organizational exit, franchises typically exile the disgruntled player to a rebuilding market far from the national spotlight. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers chose a remarkably deliberate path when trading Joey Porter Jr.
Instead of banishing the young cornerback to a small market, Pittsburgh shipped him to Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys. On “The Arthur Moats Show,” former Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin explained that the destination selection reflected surprising organizational goodwill despite a tense contract dispute.
"Pittsburgh even still said, we love you cuz. I think they're saying, yeah we can't give you that right now," Garvin said regarding the front office's mindset during negotiations. "So I'mma
send you to Dallas where I know he got the big check let's be real all the places to sit up."
By choosing Dallas, Pittsburgh avoided banishing a home-grown player with deep franchise ties, his father, Joey Porter Sr., being a legendary Steelers linebacker and former assistant coach. Moving from the Black and Gold to the Big D offered Porter a seamless transition into another high-profile ecosystem that could accommodate his long-term financial expectations.
"Hollywood to Hollywood," Garvin emphasized. "Like it's not like we sending you per se out of the lights."
The decision underscores a nuanced front-office philosophy that business disagreements do not have to devolve into vindictive spite. By sending Porter to a contender with cap flexibility and massive media reach, Pittsburgh protected its player-first reputation while maintaining a bridge with a family deeply embedded in franchise history.
"I don't think the breakup's that nasty to where it's totally a breakup to where it couldn't come back in the future," Garvin noted, leaving room for an eventual reunion down the road. "We can make up in a few years if you want to."
Ultimately, the trade allowed Pittsburgh to protect its strict contract precedents while doing right by a legacy player.
