For most NFL players, winning a hard-fought Week 1 matchup earns a night of relaxation. But for Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward, victory simply signals the start of his next film study.
Unpacking Pittsburgh’s postgame routine on his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward
,” the All-Pro defensive tackle revealed an obsessive Sunday night schedule that leaves virtually no room for early celebrations.Even after securing a win, Heyward dives straight into game film the moment he gets home, making sure to dissect every single snap twice before putting his head on the pillow.
“I like to watch the game at least twice tonight,” Heyward shared, detailing his midnight breakdown. “Just kind of feel like I have a good wherewithal
about how the game was played, how we adjusted. I break it down individually and then as a team.”
That relentless discipline isn't limited to self-scouting. Almost immediately after grading his own defense, Heyward shifts his focus to the upcoming opponent's offensive front. Looking ahead to Pittsburgh's Week 2 clash against the New England Patriots, Heyward noted that he starts mapping out opponent tendencies before the Sunday night slate even concludes.
Specifically evaluating New England’s offensive line and young quarterback Drake Maye, Heyward pointed out key matchups that demand immediate focus.
“Will Campbell, you know, I thought he played well in some instances. Drake Maye makes things happen with his feet, too. So, we got a lot to prepare for. It's good to get a win, but I'm not going to throw a parade and say everything was all Gucci.”
At 37, Heyward’s obsessive preparation serves as a masterclass for Pittsburgh's younger defensive core. While external critics debate roster age, Heyward relies on an elite postgame work ethic that keeps him sharp and keeps the Steelers ahead of the curve.
