In the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 20–13 season-opening win over the Atlanta Falcons, veteran defensive lineman Cameron Heyward delivered a tactical masterclass at the line of scrimmage. While T.J. Watt’s fourth-quarter pick-six dominated headline reels, Heyward’s three swatted passes proved equally crucial in neutralizing Atlanta’s offense, and the feat was far from accidental.
Addressing Heyward’s impact on his “Locked on Steelers” podcast, host Christopher Carter highlighted how Heyward’s film preparation allowed Pittsburgh to counter Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski’s scheme.
"Something I asked to Cam Heyward triggered an answer that I thought was really interesting and something that I hadn't necessarily considered how it could play out," Carter
explained on the show. "It's because they'd seen it before because of course you know the Falcons head coach is Kevin Stefanski and he's beaten the Steelers a few times with his quick passing attack."
When Carter pressed Heyward in the post-game locker room about whether in-game adjustments helped take away the underneath routes, Heyward credited pre-game film study of Stefanski’s rhythm concepts.
"Yeah, I think we went into this game thinking about that," Heyward told the media. "Atlanta, Cleveland, they had that relationship because it's rhythm throws and you got to be able to take that away. But we were to get our hands on a couple of them and T.J. had a pretty big one for a touchdown and kind of cemented the game."
Carter emphasized that this preparation reflected strong communication between players and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. By anticipating Stefanski’s quick-release timing, Pittsburgh’s defensive front repeatedly altered throwing lanes, holding Atlanta to just 2-of-12 on third down and laying the groundwork for Watt’s game-sealing interception.
