When 6-foot-7, 264-pound tight end Darnell Washington catches a pass or takes a handoff, opposing defensive backs brace for impact. On the Pittsburgh Steelers’ sideline, however, the mood is vastly different, it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment.
Speaking on “The Christian Kuntz Podcast
,” Steelers long snapper Christian Kuntz revealed the infectious energy Washington brings to the bench whenever he turns into a ball carrier."I can't even begin to describe the pure joy on our sideline when he gets the football," Kuntz said. "And the pure joy in the stadium is just unbelievable."
Selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Georgia, Washington has rapidly built a reputation as one of the most formidable physical presences in the league.
While primarily revered for his crushing run-blocking ability, his rare athleticism for his massive frame makes him a terrifying open-field matchup for defensive backs, who often concede upwards of 70 pounds in both visual and physical contrast.
According to Kuntz, watching smaller defenders attempt to bring down the towering tight end creates a hilarious, lighthearted atmosphere among teammates during high-stakes games.
"This dude, he's just barreling, like punishing people, and we're, everyone's just looking, giggling," Kuntz shared. "Like it's unbelievable, dude. What would you do? I'm not tackling him."
The reaction speaks volumes about Washington’s standing within Pittsburgh’s locker room. Beyond his viral hurdles-and-stiff-arms highlight reel, teammates view him as an unselfish anchor who embraced the dirty work of blocking long before he became a demanding target.
Whether executing a crucial third-down conversion or rumbling down the sideline to finish a drive, Washington’s touches do more than move the chains. They deliver a spark of energy that reverberates from the bench to the upper decks of Acrisure Stadium, proving that football at its highest level still has room for pure, unrestrained fun.
