Rather than adding fuel to public scrutiny, Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward took a firm stand on his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” protecting the locker room and emphasizing team unity over public scapegoating.

When co-host Hayden Walsh questioned whether defensive leaders step in across the aisle to confront struggling wideouts, Heyward shut down the line of inquiry, establishing a clear boundary regarding
internal team matters.
"As a leader on this team, I will not share what happens when it comes to that," Heyward stated firmly. "I will protect the locker room in that. Um, and you can call me, you know, gatekeeping a little bit, but I just think we all have our struggles."
Heyward highlighted that adversity requires locker-room reinforcement rather than public critiques. Drawing on his 16 years of NFL experience, the veteran defensive tackle stressed that every player endures slump periods, and true leadership centers on bolstering a teammate's confidence when shots are being fired from the outside.
"It's up to your teammates to have your backs," Heyward explained. "It's up to you, the guys to rally behind you and just give you the confidence to be like, 'Bro, we move on.' Like, you going to get another shot at this. Like, I'm not I'm not here to pour gasoline on the fire and say like, 'You did this, but yeah, that's it.' Like I had bad plays, too. Like, I'm not I'm not running from that."
By refusing to criticize Metcalf publicly, Heyward demonstrated the steady leadership that defines Pittsburgh's locker room culture, signaling to both fans and opponents that the Steelers intend to hopefully solve their offensive hurdles together.
