While rookie wide receivers often face a steep learning curve in the NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Germie Bernard appears to be fast-tracking his path to the field.
According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter and “Locked on Steelers” host Christopher Carter, Aaron Rodgers’ glowing review of the Alabama product signals genuine trust heading into the regular season.
Breaking down Rodgers’ post-practice comments, Carter highlighted that Rodgers pointed out Bernard’s rare mental discipline, specifically his refusal to make repeat errors. For a veteran quarterback known to be exceptionally demanding of young targets, Carter notes that avoiding mental mistakes is the single fastest way for a rookie to earn live snaps.
"Germie Bernard, in my opinion,
one of his biggest threats as Aaron Rogers pointed out is his YAC ability when he gets the ball in his hands,” explained Carter on his podcast. “He is tough to bring down. He is strong. He is sturdy. He is nimble on his feet and he is good at breaking tackles. That was one of his biggest strengths he had at Alabama when the ball was in his hands."
Carter noted that Rodgers’ validation of Bernard’s preseason performance against first-team defenders proves the game isn't moving too fast for the rookie. In Carter’s view, pairing Bernard’s physical run-after-catch dynamic with his rapid mental processing creates a versatile tool for play-caller and new head coach Mike McCarthy.
"If you have those two guys working, those are the things that can make defenses pay when they do try to double team DK Metcalf. He's going to have to play, so he's going to have to know what to do and get out there and show he can do it,” added Carter.
Ultimately, Carter believes Rodgers’ feedback confirms Bernard won't just be depth; he is primed for an immediate, impactful role.
