Since general manager Omar Khan and assistant GM Andy Weidl took over the front office, the Pittsburgh Steelers have poured relentless draft capital into their offensive trenches.
Through first-round selections on tackles like Broderick Jones, Troy Fautanu, and Max Iheanachor, a second-round center in Zach Frazier, and mid-round investments like Mason McCormick, Spencer Anderson, and rookie Gennings Dunker, the mission was clear: construct a dominant unit.
On his “Locked on Steelers” podcast, reporter Christopher Carter addressed his concerns about the line. He noted they can no longer afford to hide behind excuses about development. Carter is especially concerned about protection for quarterback Aaron Rodgers if the team cannot establish a solid
rushing attack.
Yet as the preseason winds down, head coach Mike McCarthy remains relaxed about the lack of early ground-game production. Carter said he felt McCarthy was dismissive of the concerns raised.
"He's like oh we haven't really tried. We haven't really committed to it. We're trying to see what the passing game has right now," recalled Carter.
The Steelers offense is built to win through physical control. With Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle in the backfield, establishing a dominant ground game isn't just an asset; it is an absolute necessity to protect 42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
"Aaron Rogers when he does take the field in the regular season, they better protect him," Carter emphasized. "If he starts getting hit, season's over. And another way to keep that pressure off him though is to run the football well."
Developmental grace periods have expired. While rookie quarterbacks get a pass, an offensive line assembled over years of elite draft picks must transition from potential to proficiency under line coach James Campen.
"This offensive line has been a project, but they're not a project offensive line," Carter noted. "They have been working for years. They now need to produce."
If Pittsburgh's heavily invested front cannot impose its will and clear lanes, all the front-office restructuring will amount to a wasted opportunity.
