Fresh off a hard-fought international victory in Paris, the Pittsburgh Steelers faced an immediate, unforgiving reality. They had an immediate transatlantic flight back home that moved them directly into preparation for a grueling AFC North divisional clash against the Cleveland Browns.
For team captain Cameron Heyward on his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” the physical and mental demands of the turnaround are severe, but the expectation within the locker room remains unchanged.
Boarding the team plane in Europe, Heyward gave fans a direct look at the brutal timeline the squad faces following overseas games. Rather than enjoying a restful return, the team set foot back in Pennsylvania in the middle of the night, leaving virtually
zero room for adjustment before stepping back into the facility.
"Bro, I landed like 2 o'clock in the morning. You think I'm crazy?" Heyward said while discussing the travel schedule. "Get right in. Gotta get my lift in. Then it’s on to Cleveland, bro. Got to lock in, take care of business. Divisional game."
The quick transition from an international showcase to intense divisional play presents a unique challenge, prompting questions about the fairness of scheduling a rivalry game immediately following international travel.
When asked whether asking a team to make that rapid shift was inherently unfair, Heyward didn't deny the difficulty of the task, though he refused to use it as an excuse.
"You're complaining for me," Heyward joked, before acknowledging the reality of the situation. "Yeah. It is a lot to ask a team to do that. But we built for it."
To combat the dramatic time-zone shift and hit the ground running, Heyward noted that players forced themselves to stay awake during the flight home to sync their sleep cycles for early morning workouts.
As Pittsburgh pivots straight into rivalry week, Heyward’s veteran leadership underscores a clear message: regardless of flight delays or physical exhaustion, the standard still remains the standard.
