The Pittsburgh Steelers started off their 2026 season with a win over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, but a surprising detail from their victory has emerged post-game.
According to NFL analyst Trevor Sikkema, the Steelers' defense didn't run a single man-coverage play against the Falcons, playing solely in zone coverage. Out of every NFL team, this happened only once during the 2025 season.
The Falcons had 26 total drop backs against the Steelers, and per @NextGenStats Pittsburgh did not play a single rep of man coverage -- all zone looks. That only happened once all of last season across the entire league.

This rare gameplan was likely due to the fact that Falcons were down to their third-string quarterback, and the Steelers were more focused on sitting
in two-high coverage, taking away the quick passing game while forcing Cooper Rush to work underneath with whatever the defense gave him.
It obviously worked out in Pittsburgh's favor, as their defense held Atlanta to just 13 points and 118 passing yards in the matchup — a simple yet effective strategy masterminded by DC Patrick Graham that allowed the Steelers' top defenders to shine.
There was definitely a lot more to love about the Steelers' defense than the Aaron Rodgers-led offense, as miscommunication, self-inflicted penalties, and dropped passes characterized much of Pittsburgh's efforts on Sunday, which was evident in our biggest winners and losers for Week 1.
