Earning the trust of a veteran quarterback is often the biggest hurdle for any rookie wide receiver, but when that quarterback is four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, the barrier to entry requires total mental mastery. For Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wideout Germie Bernard, gaining Rodgers' trust was less about highlighting physical gifts and more about acing a rigorous behind-the-scenes interrogation in front of the entire receiver room.
Appearing on “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Bernard detailed how Rodgers put him on the spot early in the season to evaluate his preparation and situational awareness. Rather than easing the rookie into the offense, Rodgers subjected him to high-pressure pop quizzes designed to test his complete knowledge of the opponent’s
game plan.
"He put me up in front of the room and he was just asking me all these questions," Bernard revealed. "He's like, 'Okay, who's their safeties? Who's their corners? What coverages do they play on this down? What blitzes do they bring?' And then he's like, 'Okay, what are these plays we have on first and second down? What are these plays we have on third down?'"
Bernard answered every question accurately, proving he understood the playbook. Rodgers then raised the bar, grilling the rookie on pre-snap signal adjustments to ensure he could adapt instantly on the field.
"I was able to answer all those questions," Bernard said. "He trusted that I knew what I was doing and I know how to play the game within the game. He always talks to me about that; me being able to know how he thinks has really helped build that trust."
By treating the meeting room like a classroom, Rodgers found a target he could count on when games are on the line.
