Roster cuts have already made their way into the Steel City, but the Pittsburgh Steelers still have a long way to go until they reach the 53-player limit. There are plenty of important decisions staring down the Steelers as they attempt to trim their roster down to size, one of which is what the future holds for second-year quarterback Will Howard.
Howard, who was drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was expected to compete with Mason Rudolph for the QB2 role on the roster. Considering that the Steelers had two guaranteed roster locks in Aaron Rodgers and Drew Allar, many assumed that the loser of the backup quarterback battle between Rudolph and Howard would be cut.
Well, Howard potentially knocked himself out of
the QB2 hunt following a dreadful preseason. But multiple reports indicate that it may not be as black and white as previously believed.
Leading up to the preseason finale, it was believed that both Allar and Howard would remain on the 2026 roster regardless of their performances. Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy all but confirmed that reality by telling reporters that all four quarterbacks had earned roster spots.
