The Pittsburgh Steelers defense has shown a lot to love, and a lot to be concerned about in 2026. Honestly, the unit has been so inconsistent, it's hard to imagine what defense will show up against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. But we at Steelers Wire have analyzed three defensive keys to victory that should help the team get back on track.
From leaning on blitzes to exploiting Daniel Jones' biggest weakness, here's a look at three defensive keys to victory for the Steelers' Week 5 matchup.
Bring back Blitzburgh
Thanks to the Joey Porter Jr. trade and Jamel Dean's ankle injury, the Steelers have a glaring weakness at cornerback. Luckily, the team can circumvent these issues in Week 5 by sending disguised blitzes early and often in order to give Daniel Jones as
little time as possible to exploit Pittsburgh's pass defense woes. The key here will be to time these selective blitzes in order not to leave these cornerbacks on an island.
Stop the run
This seems a bit cliché, especially when tasked with facing off against Colts superstar Jonathan Taylor, but Pittsburgh's defense can't afford to let Indianapolis establish its ground game. If the Steelers can hold off Taylor early, this ultimately will force the Colts to lean on Jones, which isn't a gameplan Indianapolis should feel comfortable with.
Exploit Daniel Jones to win turnover battle
Jones has surrendered seven total turnovers through the first four games of the season, which should leave the Steelers' defense foaming at the mouth heading into Week 5. On pace to commit nearly 30 turnovers, Jones should be pressured early and shown a variety of disguised coverages in an attempt to turn his Sunday into a nightmare.
