The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2000 season is often remembered for a late rally that nearly secured a playoff spot. But behind that 9-7 finish was an intense, previously untold dynamic between starting quarterback Kordell Stewart and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.
During an appearance on the “Locked on Steelers Squad Show,” Stewart revealed how high tension on the sideline nearly derailed the year, and how a player-led halftime intervention turned everything around.
The friction reached a boiling point early in the season during a matchup against Jacksonville. After Stewart scrambled into the end zone for a touchdown, he picked up the sideline headset expecting congratulations. Instead, Gilbride snapped.
"Kevin Gilbride goes, 'Why in the f are
you running?'" Stewart recalled. "Look at the phone. He said, 'Why the f are you running?' Hung the phone up. Dick Hoak calls back and said, ‘Kordell, don't worry about that. Keep doing what you're doing.'"
That internal divide came to a head weeks later against the Oakland Raiders. Trailing at halftime and nursing a hyperextended knee, Stewart was inside the training room when offensive tackle Wayne Gandy, wide receiver Will Blackwell, and running back Jerome Bettis confronted him.
"Big G shows me his thumbs and everything he got. He said, 'What's up? What we going to do?'" Stewart shared. "Jerome goes, 'Man, what we going to do? We playing or we not playing?' I was already gonna play, but I said, 'Hell yeah, we gonna play.'"
Re-energized by his teammates' backing, Stewart returned to lead a 24-21 comeback victory over Oakland, igniting a dramatic stretch run.
"My teammates made me understand that we needed to ride together in this one," Stewart reflected. "That was one of the highest highlights I would say of my time in Pittsburgh."
By tuning out external friction and answering his locker room's rallying cry, Stewart proved that the trust of his teammates mattered far more than any coach's play call. It proved to be the true catalyst that kept Pittsburgh's season alive.
