The Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive backfield enters the season with immense promise, but four of its five expected starters missed vast portions of training camp. As defensive coordinator Patrick Graham rolls out a disguise-heavy scheme featuring constant pre-snap movement, a lack of shared rep time could trigger early-season growing pains.
That is the concern shared by local reporters Christopher Carter and Nick Farabaugh on the “Locked on Steelers” podcast.
Joey Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey, Jaquan Brisker, and DeShon Elliott all navigated extended absences during August due to injuries, PUP list designations, or contract matters. While off-field camaraderie remains high, execution in Graham's complex system requires split-second operational chemistry.
In a video shown by Carter, Brisker downplayed any prospective rust, insisting the room's closeness bridges the gap.
"I think to be honest, there's not really going to be no drop off," Brisker said. "You know, we're so close in the locker room. So, I feel like the secondary, we're all as one."
Brisker also embraced the tactical freedom embedded in Graham's scheme. "Yeah, it just excites me that we have so many moving parts, so many players who are very talented who will get on the field and so many players who are playmakers and that's what you want," he added.
However, executing complex disguises requires more than locker room chemistry. As Farabaugh noted, "You can be close off the field, but really it takes reps getting to know each other on the field, knowing each other's communication style, your body language, understanding that that can absolutely be a thing that you have to overcome."
With pre-snap communication serving as the glue for Graham's system, any miscue during coverage switches could open the door for big plays downfield. How quickly this unit meshes on the field will determine whether Pittsburgh stumbles early or hits its stride by midseason.
