When a new head coach takes over a historic franchise, establishing a distinct identity is usually step one. For Western Pennsylvania native Mike McCarthy, resetting the culture inside the Pittsburgh Steelers' locker room hasn't required reinventing the wheel, just leaning into the grit of his hometown.
On his show “The Christian Kuntz Podcast,” Steelers long snapper and fellow Pittsburgh local Christian Kuntz detailed how McCarthy is injecting authentic Steel City identity into team meetings. Central to McCarthy’s strategy are custom, cinematic hype videos centered on the blue-collar labor and history of Western Pennsylvania's steel mills.
"He's been flipping the culture," Kuntz explained. "Trying to flip the culture. Set his tone. Set his ways."
Rather than relying on generic motivational speeches, McCarthy's visual presentation directly connects the physical toll of steel working to the mindsets required on the football field. For local players like Kuntz, the emotional resonance hits home immediately.
"The hype videos, I mean, I have goosebumps," Kuntz admitted. "I'm from Pittsburgh, so it's like, you know, my uncle giving the team meeting and like firing me up to go play. It really is.
“And he's playing like the steel mill and how steel was formed, and the process, and how the labor of that and what those workers had to go through. It's just connecting the dots of what the city's about and what the Steelers mean, like where the name came from. It's cool. He's been hitting the nail on the head with that one."
Beyond the motivational videos, Kuntz noted that McCarthy’s disciplined schedule management and focus on player health have energized the roster. By bridging the team's historic roots with a modern, player-first structure, McCarthy isn't just coaching a football team; he is reminding them exactly who they represent every time they step onto the field.
