A new report has provided more details on the trade situation surrounding Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., dismissing previous claims that the team hadn't received any interest yet.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, at least one team has contacted the Steelers about a potential trade for Porter, possibly contradicting the ESPN report that Pittsburgh hasn't received "serious inquiries" on the situation.
"Friday’s deep dive from ESPN into the far-simpler-than-it-seems contract issue between the Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. included a contention that the team has not received any 'serious inquiries' regarding a trade," Florio wrote. "As one source put it in response, the Steelers could be trying to prevent a trade market
from materializing.
"We’re told that at least one team has called the Steelers about Porter. Whether that qualifies as a 'serious inquiry' is a matter of interpretation. The Steelers apparently want to keep Porter, for now. If they start actively negotiating a trade, the situation could take on a life of its own and quickly become an inevitability. (A fait accompli, if you’re feeling fancy.)"
When it comes to Porter's contract dispute with the Steelers, reports have indicated it has more to do with guaranteed money than anything else. Pittsburgh doesn't negotiate contracts midseason, which means that if Porter wants to play in 2026, it'll either be with a new team or on the final year of his rookie deal with the Steelers.
We at Steelers Wire are hopeful that although there may be some trade interest from around the league, Porter remains with Pittsburgh through at least the 2026 season, where the two sides can once again resume contract talks following the season.
