Former Pittsburgh Steelers assistant Brian Flores delivered a defensive masterpiece as coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, completely dismantling a Chicago Bears offense that had hung 59 points on the board just one week prior. Holding Chicago to a meager three points in a 9-3 victory, Flores unleashed a relentless blitz scheme that left quarterback Caleb Williams completely disoriented.
On his “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” podcast, Steelers longtime defensive tackle Cameron Heyward gave Flores his flowers during the show's "Unsung Heroes" segment. Heyward praised the sheer boldness and tactical brilliance required to pull off such an aggressive game plan against a high-scoring division opponent.
"My unsung hero is Brian Flores, Vikings
defensive coordinator," Heyward said. "You go into a game where the game before a team scored 59 points and what'd you do? Said, 'Nah, you ain't doing that. We going to give you three.' Four sacks, 10 QB hits, seven pass breakups, two takeaways, and then they blitzed Caleb Williams 27 out of 33 times. I think that was just a masterclass."
What makes Flores' defensive scheme so special, according to Heyward, is his ability to constantly evolve his pre-snap disguises without sacrificing soundness. Rather than relying on a static pressure package, Flores routinely mugged up the A-gaps with linebackers before sending rushers from unexpected angles.
"Flo always knows how to get in his bag," Heyward added. "He knows how to provide different looks. He knows how to show a mugged-up look with your inside linebackers. He studies the game. He wants to stress your team and make you think about where all this pressure is coming from."
For Steelers fans who remember Flores' impactful stint on Mike Tomlin's staff, his masterclass served as a reminder of his elite defensive mind, one Heyward expects to see running his own NFL team again soon.
