As the Pittsburgh Steelers
sit at 6-2 during their bye week, trade deadline speculation continues to swirl around potential roster additions. With the November deadline just days away, fans are eager to see if general manager Omar Khan will land a splashy name to bolster the wide receiver room or secondary. However, analyzing Khan’s historical track record reveals a very deliberate, patient operational strategy.Instead of swinging for blockbuster deals with high draft capital, Khan has consistently built roster depth through calculated, day-three draft compensation. As reporter Mark Kaboly pointed out on “Kaboly and Mack,” history shows the Steelers will not panic or overpay.
"Omar's been there since 2022. So, what are we looking at? This will
be the fifth trade deadline, I believe," Kaboly noted. "So, his four prior ones he's made five trades at the deadline. Deadline-ish. Okay. Never giving up anything more than a fifth-rounder. You given up a fifth-rounder, a seventh-rounder, a seventh-rounder, a seventh-rounder. So, if you're thinking they're going to throw a two or a three at somebody, I find that hard to believe."
This disciplined approach does not mean Khan intends to sit idle. Given the lingering injuries across the wide receiver corps and cornerback room, standing pat could leave Pittsburgh vulnerable down the stretch.
"You can't go into this thinking, 'Oh, we'll be fine until you're not fine,'" Kaboly warned. "I think you got to protect yourself. I think you owe it to the organization. I think you owe it to the players right now. The 6-2 record, you have to go out there and try to fortify that position regardless. If it’s going to hurt a little bit, it’s going to hurt a little bit."
By pairing calculated day-three draft capital with targeted depth additions, Khan can insulate the Steelers against late-season injuries without sacrificing future draft assets.
