Even away from the sidelines, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s ability to dominate media headlines and get inside the heads of opponents remains unmatched. The latest chapter in division psychological warfare came after Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken publicly lashed out at Tomlin’s media commentary following a Week 2 victory.
Tomlin had casually revived the infamous "Browns is the Browns" jab during a national broadcast. When Monken emotionally fired back in his postgame press conference, Steelers veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward couldn't help but laugh at how easily opposing figures fall into Tomlin's traps.
Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” the seven-time Pro
Bowler broke down why Tomlin's psychological tactics remain so effective across the league.
"All I say, all it just clarifies he’s got mind control," Heyward joked, referencing how Tomlin manipulates narrative noise to affect rivals and motivate his own locker room.
"That's all it just means. Like Mike T, Mike T knows how to play the game. He knows what he's doing. He's been a head coach. Either he's saying something on purpose to motivate someone else or he's doing it to motivate you," added Heyward.
Co-host Hayden Walsh noted that Monken's emotional reaction completely undermined any claim of ignoring outside noise.
"Todd Monken can never say, 'We don't listen to the outside noise. We don't listen to any of that,'" Walsh observed. "You can't say that now because you're going at Mike, you're going at an analyst."
For Heyward, the back-and-forth highlights a key truth about navigating the NFL’s media landscape. While rival coaches often allow external critiques to dictate their emotional temperature, Tomlin continues to masterfully leverage public perception as a weapon, proving his reach extends far beyond the field.
