The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring a reunion with veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts, but contract negotiations and internal locker room dynamics could complicate his return. Despite holding opponent rushing attacks in check at times, Pittsburgh's defensive second level has leaked big plays, surrendering 416 yards allowed off missed tackles over the first five games.
The defensive struggles have placed a spotlight on middle linebacker Patrick Queen. On the podcast “Snap Count,” co-host Trai Essex highlighted the ongoing tackling issues, noting Queen's hesitation on a key drive.
"Patrick Queen, our middle linebacker, was face to face with Jonathan Taylor dead to right in the hole. He hesitated. JT got outside, was able to pick up a first down,
and they were able to score on that drive," explained Essex.
While bringing back Roberts appears to be an obvious fix, former Steelers quarterback and show co-host Charlie Batch offered rare insider insight into why Roberts was cut prior to the season. Batch believes existing linebackers felt threatened by Roberts' veteran authority and knowledge of defensive coordinator Patrick Graham's scheme.
"You talk about someone who is consistent Super Bowl winner and he becomes a threat to that room," Batch explained. "I think when he came in and just watching the manner of how those players gravitated had communicating with him. I feel people in there became insecure. Why is this veteran in the room when we feel like we have the pieces already in the room, and then ultimately he was released because of him being a threat."
Now, contract talks carry leverage challenges. Roberts wants assurances that he will not face another sudden release after signing. As Batch detailed, Roberts is seeking transparency.
"I now want to come into the building have a conversation to figure out where we're going because I don't want to go through this again. I want to make sure when I'm here I ain't playing and finishing out the season," Batch added.
Unless Pittsburgh offers structural guarantees, Roberts' potential return remains uncertain.
