Winning in the NFL is never easy, but the Pittsburgh Steelers have perfected a style of victory that feels equal parts thrilling and precarious. Time and again, Pittsburgh’s teams have managed to pull out victories in games where they are statistically outplayed, relying on timely, game-flipping splash plays from their defensive stars to bail them out of structural flaws.
As the Steelers prepare for their Week 2 clash against the New England Patriots, national analysts are once again pointing out this familiar pattern. Reflecting on Pittsburgh’s recent performances, “Pro Football Talk” co-host Michael Holley noted that Pittsburgh’s record often paints a far prettier picture than its down-to-down execution warrants.
“The Steelers should have lost
to the Falcons,” Holley said. “Cooper Rush at quarterback, they should have lost to the Falcons. Now, the Steelers have displayed yet again that knack for making the big plays in the big spots, which is why they beat the Patriots last year. Even though the Patriots outplayed them, they have that uncanny sense of when to make the big play.”
That “uncanny sense” is driven by elite individual talents like T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward, who possess the rare ability to destroy an opponent’s drive with a single strip-sack or key third-down stop.
But relying on late-game heroics isn’t a sustainable strategy over a 17-game season. When an offense stalls or struggles to sustain drives, the defense is eventually forced to play too many snaps, shrinking the margin for error to zero.
While clutch playmaking is a hallmark of Pittsburgh football, leaning on it too heavily masks deeper operational vulnerabilities. If the Steelers want to transition from scrappy regular-season survivors to legitimate postseason contenders, they must start winning games on execution rather than waiting for another miracle play to save them.
