Appearing on teammate Cameron Heyward’s podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” offensive tackle Broderick Jones offered firsthand insight into the transformation taking place within the offensive line room under McCarthy’s leadership.
"He's opening it up quite a bit," Jones shared when asked about the team’s strategic direction under the new head coach. "I feel like Mike McCarthy wants us to push the ball downfield and really get on teams early."
That philosophy
marks a clear departure from past years, shifting away from standard ground-and-pound early downs toward a pass-heavy framework that relies on rhythm and tempo. While established offensive veterans are adjusting to new terminology, the underlying goal centers on putting opposing defenses on their heels.
Jones noted that the team is leaning heavily into pre-snap motion and dynamic formations to generate mismatch opportunities for playmaker targets. He explained that McCarthy's scheme places significant emphasis on intermediate routes and creating opportunities for big plays through quick processing and timing.
"It's just about trust and getting the ball out fast," Jones noted during the episode. "We've got to give the quarterback time, but the play design gets guys open in space."
Despite the schematic adjustments, executing clean football remains the top priority. Jones acknowledged that eliminating pre-snap penalties and refining the offensive line's cadence are critical focus areas as the unit gelled throughout camp.
Still, the directive from the coaching staff is clear - establish a high-ceiling passing attack that dictates terms to opponents. If the unit maintains consistency up front, McCarthy’s offensive overhaul could mark a bright new era for Pittsburgh’s scoring output.
