With wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. sidelined, the Pittsburgh Steelers need their young receiving corps to make an immediate impact. All eyes are turning toward third-year receiver Roman Wilson as Pittsburgh prepares to face an Indianapolis Colts defense that presents a very specific schematic challenge.
The Colts rely heavily on man-to-man coverage, running it at the second-highest rate in the NFL behind only the Cleveland Browns. For a Steelers passing offense that has periodically stalled when opposing corners press at the line of scrimmage, generating clean separation is the top priority.
As host Christopher Carter noted on his “Locked on Steelers” podcast, man defense "has been a kryptonite for the Steelers offense."
Beating man coverage
requires precise route-running, sudden changes of direction, and elite speed control, traits that Wilson possesses and continues to refine.
While reflecting on how to defeat tight coverage, Carter shared that tight end Pat Freiermuth emphasized the straightforward nature of the task, stating that "the biggest way to beat man is just simply to win their one-on-one battles and get open and create that open space."
Wilson's ability to manipulate defensive backs with varying tempos makes him a natural fit to exploit those single-coverage looks. The coaching staff has lauded his route discipline and explosive acceleration, noting his development in setting up defenders rather than relying purely on top-end speed.
Furthermore, veteran leadership has played a crucial role in his growth. Wilson highlighted the guidance he receives in the building, calling quarterback Aaron Rodgers "a great mentor, a great leader" who acts like a "coach in a way" by offering continuous feedback on route execution.
If the Steelers hope to stay on schedule and sustain drives against a stingy Indianapolis secondary, Wilson’s knack for creating separation will be paramount. Winning those isolated perimeter battles may ultimately prove to be the deciding factor in Week 5.
