When the Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off an emotional comeback victory in Tampa, star names like Aaron Rodgers and Jalen Ramsey naturally captured the headlines. However, the true unsung hero of Pittsburgh’s late-game defensive stand was former Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean.
Returning to face his former team, Dean delivered a lockdown masterclass, utilizing his intimate familiarity with Tampa Bay’s offensive scheme to make game-altering plays when the stakes were highest.
Dean spent significant time in Tampa’s secondary, and that preparation paid massive dividends on Sunday. On the afternoon, he posted a stat line that read like a defensive coordinator’s dream: six pass defense breakups, four tackles, and a crucial interception returned 40 yards
that flipped the game’s momentum. His instincts in high-stress third- and fourth-down situations kept the Buccaneers from extending drives down the stretch.
On the latest episode of the “Deebo and Joe” podcast, former Steelers legends James Harrison and Joe Haden broke down film of Dean’s performance, praising his meticulous preparation and route recognition.
"My man Dean, what was that? Six passes defended, a interception, 40-yard return on that, and four tackles," Harrison noted, highlighting how Dean sat on route concepts before Tampa’s receivers could make their breaks. "He was sitting on everything. It was like he knew their playbook. That man got good notes. Seven years over there, man. Got great notes."
Haden echoed Harrison’s praise, detailing how Dean executed situational football flawlessly during crunch time. "Dean straps on second down. It's third and long. Play deep. Make them throw the ball in front of you. Catch and tackle."
Though Harrison jokingly criticized Dean for not tucking his shoulder on his 40-yard interception return to score, noting he "wouldn't have been out at the three," Dean’s secondary execution was paramount. His masterclass against his former squad proved that preparation and inside knowledge can be just as lethal as raw talent.
