It was already reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions were talking about a trade for Steelers cornerabck Joey Porter Jr. An injury on Thursday Night Football might have just sped things up. The Lions lost starting safety Avonte Maddox to a foot injury against the Buffalo Bills leaving their secondary in rough shape after two weeks.
This is in addition to the team releasing former first-round pick cornerback Terrion Arnold due to criminal charges he incurred in the offseason. The Lions secondary is a significant weakness on their defense and its struggles are a significant factor in why Detroit are currently 1-1.
Maddox was listed by the Lions as a defensive back and was being pressed into service as more cornerback than true safety
which only further pushes the narrative that a deal could come between Pittsburgh and Detroit for Porter Jr., which would give the Lions a true No. 1 shutdown cornerback.
