While fans and global media celebrated the spectacle of the NFL’s inaugural regular-season showcase in France, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain Cameron Heyward emerged from the 16-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints with a far more critical assessment: the pitch itself.
Speaking on his “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward” podcast, Heyward pulled back the curtain on the unique physical hazards of playing international games on fields designed primarily for European soccer. While acknowledging the memorable atmosphere and food, the veteran defensive tackle did not hold back when comparing the playing surface at Stade de France to past international venues in Ireland and England.
According to Heyward, the fundamental problem stems from the soil
and grass root structure required for different sports. Rugby grounds allow heavy linemen to anchor down, whereas soccer pitches give way under high-impact forces.
"I think Ireland's playing surface was better because they were used to. I feel like the field we play on was used to like rugby and like people digging in," Heyward explained. "When you watch the France game, a lot of guys were slipping because that is a soccer field. That is something where you try to kick up; it's coming out, it's wet, it's damp, it's used to just everybody running around, not really digging on that."
The slick surface directly impacted trench warfare, stripping pass rushers of their leverage. Heyward revealed that even adjustments to specialized gear failed to solve the problem.
"Bro, I was wearing my metal seven studs," Heyward said. "They're longer, right? And we talk so much when we have these beat up fields that you need to have a longer stud and be ready for it. So, I changed my shoes thinking, 'Oh, this will be great. I won't slip.' Still freaking slipped."
As the league continues expanding its international footprint, Heyward’s feedback highlights an ongoing challenge: adapting global venues to meet the rigorous footing demands of NFL football.
