When big plays shatter a defense, casual viewers typically point fingers at cornerbacks chasing receivers downfield. However, former Pittsburgh Steelers stars James Harrison and Joe Haden offer a sharp tactical reality check - massive secondary meltdowns often stem from fundamental pre-snap communication failures.
Breaking down a 60-yard coverage bust against the Cleveland Browns on their “Deebo & Joe” podcast, the Pro Bowl duo dissected how a simple assignment error completely derailed Pittsburgh’s defensive structure. While the play resulted in a splash downfield, Haden and Harrison traced the collapse straight back to safety alignment in "Cover 2 / Cloud".
"You had your corner playing squat," Haden explained, clarifying how the safety rotated
into the wrong zone. "His half field was rolled over next to the other half field. So, we had two safeties standing next to each other playing the same half. Soon as he realized, 'oh, I rolled to the wrong side,' he took off running back over to where he was supposed to be. So, that's on the safety."
For Harrison, watching two deep defenders cluster on the same side of the field was unacceptable for a professional unit. The former Defensive Player of the Year voiced intense frustration with the lack of basic pre-snap mechanics.
"Communication is non-existent," Harrison said. "When we're playing zone coverages, basic things of going to your safeties, you run half the field, you're supposed to split the field. You got two dudes going this way, the same side of the field. I'm like, 'Oh my god, that's junior varsity.' You know what I'm saying? Simple. That's junior varsity, bro. I need you to be great at the things that take no talent, and that's communication and knowing what the hell you doing."
Harrison's tape breakdown serves as a stark reminder: talent means nothing when communication collapses before the snap.
For the Steelers' sake, they need to smooth out the communication wrinkles and fast. The team’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, and they still have to play in Paris.
