Several high-value fantasy quarterbacks have landed on injured reserve these first two weeks. Dropping them or moving them to IR is painful but easy. Other fantasy QBs have simply underperformed. That's harder for managers to navigate. Should we confidently stick with them?
Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix were two of my favorite preseason QB bargains. The former has shone. The latter has struggled. So how should managers approach Nix going forward?
Here's the thing: the first half of the Broncos' season was always going to be challenging. After battling the Chiefs and Jaguars, they're about to face the Rams and then the 49ers. 11 days later, the Seahawks. Nix will be fortunate to average 16 fantasy points during that stretch.
But then he gets the Cardinals,
Chiefs (at home), Panthers, Raiders, Steelers, Dolphins, Jets, Raiders, and Bills (in that order). He's finished among the top-10 fantasy QBs in both NFL seasons. All of his top skill players from last year have returned, and they've added Jaylen Waddle and rookie Jonah Coleman. This is a stacked offense that will eventually break out. Nix will be fine.
What about the similarly disappointing Justin Herbert? It's an even worse situation. The Chargers' next six opponents are the Bills, Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, and Texans. Four of those games will be on the road. Ouch. Things will open up in the second half of the season, though not as light as Denver's schedule.
The key takeaway is that Herbert should be fine too. But managers may need to wait until mid-November to reap the benefits. In very deep leagues, he can be safely stashed. In shallowed leagues, you can find better week-to-week options.
