The have been returns of missed field goals for touchdowns. Not many went through as many area codes as the Toronto Argonauts' Janarion Grant on Friday.
The Argos were playing Winnipeg when the Blue Bombers decided to try for three points on the strength of the leg of Sergio Castillo.
The West Texas A&M product had kicked 26 straight field goals. Until ...
The kick missed and Grant was deep, deep, deep in the back of the end zone.
He corraled the kick and was off and running ... for 128 yards.
Grant played college ball at Rutgers and saw action in two NFL games with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018. He played with Winnipeg for four years before joining Toronto in 2024.
This return for a touchdown wasn't a CFL record. That honor goes to Boyd Carter and
Dave Mann, also of the Argonauts, on Aug. 22, 1958, they combined for a a 131 yarder. Carter ran the first 15 yards, lateraled to Mann, who did the final 116.
Ken Hinton of the BC Lions had a 130-yarder 49 years and a day ago in 1977.
What is also interesting is Grant returned the kick to the Argos' bench side of the field. There is a strategy with missed kicks to go to the side of the field your team is on because opponents let down and tend to head to their sideline.
That became prominently discussed after Chris Davis' famed "kick six" for Auburn against Alabama in the 2013 Iron Bowl.
