On just the fifth play of the Seattle Seahawks' first drive of the NFL season, quarterback Sam Darnold exited with a hip injury after being sacked by Dre’Mont Jones. He has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the game, although the severity of his injury is currently unknown.

Darnold led the Seahawks to their first Super Bowl win since 2013 with Pete Carroll as the head coach and Russell Wilson at quarterback. It was his first season with the team after leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-win season in 2024. There were high expectations for the Seahawks to be Super Bowl contenders again this season.
With Darnold out for the remainder
of the game, Drew Lock has stepped in as the quarterback. This is his first significant playing time in a game since January 2025, as he did not play much last season because Darnold never missed a game. In fact, he has played in all 17 games each of the past two years.
Through the first quarter, neither the Seahawks nor the New England Patriots scored. However, the Patriots got on the board in the second quarter with a touchdown to rookie tight end Eli Raridon, and that remains the only score of the game through the first half.
