Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart's knee injury is worse than originally expected.
Jaxson will undergo surgery on his left knee and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. Giants coach John Harbaugh did not rule out a possible return if the Giants were to make the NFL playoffs. Harbaugh may be a little optimistic about Dart's immediate future.
Dart's injury occurred during the opening possession of the 28-6 Monday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
The ACL is still intact, but Dart injured his MCL and meniscus, which will require surgery as reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter.
With the surgery expected soon, Dart was still in the Giants' locker room and at team meetings this week.
"I think he's determined.
He's bummed. It's hard," Harbaugh said. "The season is not over, but it is for him. We kind of talked about that [in the team meeting], too. That was part of it. That was part of the deal. With injuries, there is a certain mourning that takes place. Had the same thing for Calvin [Austin]. Same thing over the years because you realize how hard it is for a player, really. But it's tough on the team. It's tough on all of us."
The Giants initially hoped that Dart didn't suffer a long-term injury, with Harbaugh saying Monday that the team probably avoided "a disastrous outcome." Tuesday imaging showed more extensive damage than expected. After exhausting all options and seeking more opinions, the Giants and Dart elected for surgery.
New York will now turn to the veteran Jameis Winston for the rest of the 2026 season.
