Several fantasy quarterbacks crushed market expectations in Week 1. Are they for real, or should managers look elsewhere?
Bryce Young broke through on Sunday with 31.4 fantasy points -- the third-best performance of his career. Yes, he's actually cracked 31.4 points twice before. His ceiling apparently is just fine. The challenge is his floor, which remains in single digits.
He beat up on a Bears team that realistically could lead the NFL this year in points scored and points against. However, it's too soon to call him a must-add in 12-team leagues. He'll have plenty of favorable defensive matchups this season, making him an intriguing bye-week streamer.
Tyler Shough's 23.2 points seem impressive until we factor in context: the Saints trailed 21-0
late in the third quarter, forcing Shough and the offense to go for broke. It worked, in that they scored 30 points in a hurry. But he needed to hurl the ball 56 times. That's not easily replicable. Even 35 pass attempts is a lot by NFL standards. Shough probably won't finish this season in the top 16.
Finally, Jacoby Brissett didn't exactly light it up with 16.5 points. But that was good enough for top-16 production, and he has plenty of room to pop. He's surrounded by one of the best young running backs, arguably the best tight end, and an above-average wideout corps.
If for no other reason, Brissett should be rostered because of his fantasy playoff schedule, when Arizona will face the Jets, Saints, and Raiders. If you're wondering why I drafted three Cardinals, that's one reason.
