Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has said that quarterback Baker Mayfield has a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand. The injury was suffered during the fourth quarter of a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, 23-16.
"He's going to get an MRI [Monday] just to see exactly what inside is wrong with it, so we'll know tomorrow," Bowles said, adding that X-rays did not reveal a fracture but that the result is not definitive until further imaging is examined.
A recovery timetable will be known after the MRI. The MRI will show more subtle damage, like hairline fractures or ligament damage that an X-ray will not show.
Mayfield's injury came with 1:54 remaining, when Vikings linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted his pass. It happened on fourth-and-13
as the Buccaneers tried to come back from a 20-16 deficit. He was under pressure for several seconds and evaded multiple defenders as he scurried to the right sideline. But as he threw the ball, he was hit by inside linebacker Blake Cashman.
Mayfield has started 54 straight games since joining the Bucs, which is tied for first in the league, although last season Mayfield appeared on the injury report in 10 out of 17 weeks.
