After an offseason of talks and negotiations that stalled during training camp, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield have finally agreed to a three-year, $165 million contract extension to keep him with the team through the 2029 season.

Mayfield revived his career in Tampa Bay after being released by the Cleveland Browns, who drafted him No. 1 overall back in 2018. Following brief stints with the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles

Rams, the Buccaneers signed Mayfield to a one-year, $4 million contract in 2023. That season, he was named to his first Pro Bowl and was third in Comeback Player of the Year Voting.

Last season was the first year since Mayfield became the quarterback that the Buccaneers didn't make the playoffs, though it was an injury-riddled season with players missing extensive time on both sides of the ball. He still felt he deserved to be one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, and at the beginning of the offseason, Tampa Bay did not seem to see things that way.

If Mayfield had not been signed to an extension, he would have been set to become a free agent this offseason. His contract ties him with Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams as the third-highest-paid quarterback per year in the NFL, behind only Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs and Dak Prescott with the Dallas Cowboys.

Tampa Bay will begin their season on Sun. Sept. 13 (1 p.m. EST / FOX) against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mayfield has done quite well against the Bengals in his NFL career, defeating them six of the eight times he has played them.
