In his statement announcing his retirement, Johnson said in part, “Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization, and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percent in the game.” Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie released a statement following the announcement of Johnson’s retirement.

During his 14-year career, Johnson helped lead the Philadelphia offense to two Super Bowls, which were their first championships in the modern era. He is widely considered a sure-thing Hall of Famer after going to the Pro Bowl six times and earning two first-team All-Pro selections. Johnson was a second-team All-Pro in three other seasons.
The Eagles selected him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson was the most talented player to come out of the first round of that draft and one of the best players in the highly talented 2013 draft class, which included Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Keenan Allen, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Between Kelce, Juszczyk, Johnson, and Allen, they have been named to 33 Pro Bowls.
