For his whole career in the NBA to date (now about to embark on its 20th season) new Boston Celtics veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr. has played for small market ball clubs. From his start with the team that drafted him out of Ohio State (the Memphis Grizzlies) to the Utah Jazz
and most recently the Minnesota Timberwolves, Conley has only played for teams that joined the league later in the history of the association as well.Now, signing with the Celtics, the Fayetteville, Arkansas native can say he has been a part of a storied ball club with a rich history of winning. That was reportedly part of the decision of Conley to join the team, and made his free agency a brief process, per the man himself during his recent introductory press conference.
"It was fairly quick, honestly," offered Conley.
"But the main reason, (I signed with Boston is that) you look around the league, there's very few organizations and teams that you look at that, honestly, are trying to win every year," he continued.
"The culture here in Boston speaks for itself," Conley continued. "The championships, the banners, the fan base, all that, it encompasses all of that. So looking around, I was like, 'Man, what opportunities are out there for me?;' Boston was a real one, and (to) have an opportunity to play for such a storied franchise."
"(Celtics coach) Joe (Mazzulla) and (team president) Brad (Stevens) and all the team, the guys, the players to the staff, A1, top notch, and (to) have an opportunity to be a part of it and a tribute to that and (to) do what I can to help try to get that goal of a championship, which would be my first opportunity to try to do that. I just want to try to do it here."
