The Boston Celtics are a way of life for many of their fans as much as those working for the team itself. And for Celtics president Rich Gotham, that is exactly the sort of engagement he and his team on the business side of the stored franchise are aiming for. "I want people to give a (expletive)," said Gotham in a recent interviewwith the "CORE Journey" podcast. "I want people to really care, and in order for that to be true, I think they need to feel purpose beyond a paycheck."
"Our culture comes from people feeling to have a real purpose that they've got a personal stake in, an emotional stake in, more than just a career stake in. And I think on the surface at the Celtics, you'd say, 'Well, that's easy because the Celtics are about trying
to win championships so everyone can align around raising the banner and winning a championship."
"You can't control that," he continued. "You can do your best every year, try to make all the right decisions, but sometimes it still doesn't go your way. And it takes luck, and it takes a lot of things that are out of your control."

"So if your only purpose is winning championships, it's not going to be fulfilling all the time," added the Celtics president.
"There's got to be something else. And I try to think about it this way because this is how I've been myself for 23 years. It's a long time."
