Former Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis announcedhe is stepping away from the sport of basketball in a recent social media post. Porzingis, who helped the Celtics win a title in 2024 (and was dealing with health issues even then), has been struggling with chronic illness that has had him unable to have the sort of impact or stamina needed for his own standards.
"This season I was really looking forward to running it with this group, but as I ramped up, my body didn't respond the way I anticipated," wrote the Latvian center in the post. "I'm doing good, but I know what it takes, and I'm not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself."
"At this point, I've made the decision to prioritize my health and step away
from the game I love," added the Boston big man alum.

"In this situation, I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a solution that makes sense," he added. "I'm thankful to my family and close ones for always being there. Much appreciation to all of you for the support."
It is unclear if KP will try to return to the game after rest and whatever other means might be available have had a chance to change his health. But at least for now, the champion Celtics center will not be suiting up any time soon.
