Today in Boston Celtics history, the team held its media day for the 2018-19 NBA season. The Celtics, of course, could not foresee the disappointing trajectory the season would take. Boston concluded the season with a record of 49-33, following significant internal turmoil that resulted in the loss of star point guard Kyrie Irving and veteran big man Al Horford in free agency.
As such, media day was marked as it often is by much optimism among the players. "I can only feel like myself playing out there in an NBA game," shared Irving via the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach. "I had great opportunities this summer to be around great people," added the former Duke standout, who related he'd spent much of the summer in the Pacific Northwest playing pickup
games with Celtics legend Bill Russell in the audience. "I just love being out there with him. He’s a great player and teammate," said forward Jayson Tatum of playing with Irving. "I still get excited at some of the things he does on the floor. It never ceases to amaze me."
"In 2014 with the Spurs (NBA title team), everyone set aside their egos and allowed us to be great, and that’s one of the common things I see here in Boston," offered center Aron Baynes ahead of the season, blissfully unaware of how little that would be the case for the coming season.
Transactions
Finally, it is also the date of the Celtics signing former Auburn guard Bryce Brown to a training camp deal in 2019.
The Decatur, Georgia native ultimately would not make the team, later signing with the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks.
