The Boston Celtics recently signed Devin Carter to a training camp deal. The 2024 NBA lottery pick has spent his first two years in the league with the Sacramento Kings. However, earlier this summer, he was salary-dumped in a deal with the Atlanta Hawks and was ultimately waived by the franchise.
Now, Carter has a chance to grab an NBA lifeline, assuming he can impress Boston's coaching staff throughout their training camp and preseason preparations. He will face competition from Milos Uzan and Tucker DeVries, who were both part of Boston's Summer League roster earlier this summer.
Carter brings a high-energy approach to the court, thriving in the margins with active hands and a willingness to crash the glass. Unfortunately, he does struggle to shoot
the ball across all three levels, which could hamper his chances of landing on Boston's roster via what will most likely be a two-way contract.
In a recent discussion on SacTown Sports 1140, Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross discussed what led the Kings to cut ties with Carter after just two seasons.
"I don't know why they would waive him," Carmichael said. "But I do know the issue the Kings had with him...The knock on him here was that he wasn't exactly adhering to what the coaches wanted him to do. They were saying, 'just go out there, play your [expletive] off, don't force your offense, get into the rhythm of the game.' And Devin had issues with that. He would get out there, he would force things at times, instead of focusing what he was best at, which is defense, high-energy play and getting in passing lanes...I don't know what the issue was in Atlanta."
Brad Stevens and Joe Mazzulla have done an exceptional job at building a winning culture in Boston. As such, Carter will need to be both coachable and willing to play his role if he's going to stick with the franchise. Right now, he has a great opportunity in front of him; however, it's on him to grab it and run with it.
