As backup Boston Celtics wing Jordan Walsh recently pointed out, you do not need to arrive at training camp until Media Day rolls around with Boston. But even though that late arrival date permits players a long recuperation period over the NBA offseason, as Walsh also notes, nearly all Celtics players arrived well ahead of that deadline to work on their games as a team.
And after a recent training camp practice on Friday (Oct. 2) morning, Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla echoed that sentiment, saying (viaCLNS Media) that "I think it's important. You may not see the seeds of that right away, but I think it's important … to the environment of setting a tone of consistent work ethic over the course of an entire year."
"And it's not just about what
you do during the season," suggested the Celtics coach, "so I think it starts there."
"I think our player development team, led by Craig (Luschenat), they do a great job of setting that environment," said Mazzulla. "It's about development, it's about getting better and then it bleeds into the to the season."
"I think there's a different energy when those guys are here all year round working. It's a credit to them, and it's credit to our staff. So I think you see the seeds of that kind of growth a couple of years now. You've seen the guys that have done it, but it's got to start somewhere and it starts with those guys setting the tone for offseason workouts."
