The Boston Celtics have been something of a factory for new NBA head coaches in recent years, with the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets hiring away Will Hardy and Charles Lee, respectively, while several other members of Boston's coaching staff interviewing for other openings as well.
Among that latter category is Celtics assistant coach DJ MacLeay, who burnished his resume for such a gig a little more by coaching Boston for half the game in their first preseason tilt, a 124-113 road win vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers. Postgame, MacLeay opened up about his experience helming the team on Thursday (Oct. 8) evening. "All these experiences open your eyes to all the different things that a head coach deals with," said MacLeay viaCLNS Media.
"And there
were things about that process that I could have done better," he added, "but I wouldn't have known having not gone through it before."
"Just like tonight, there were plenty of things that I screwed up and I could have been better for the guys," said the Celtics coach. "I think ultimately (I'm) trying to be in a space where you take these experiences, you learn from them, you try to get better from them, you try to be better for the people around you, and serve the players as best you can."
"And I think you try to take that mindset, the gratitude for this opportunity, for that opportunity with the (NBA head coaching) interview, and just keep moving forward."
