Hugo Gonzalez produced an encouraging rookie season with the Boston Celtics after being selected with the 28th overall pick in 2025. The rookie forward showcased sky-high potential on the defensive end, along with a 'work in progress' jump shot and upside as an on-ball creator. It's safe to assume that Gonzalez could potentially have a big career ahead of him in Boston.
However, the momentum of his rookie season hasn't served González well this summer. He was inconsistent during the Celtics outing in Las Vegas Summer League, and then struggled while playing international basketball for Spain just months later. The hope, though, is that once the new season starts and Gonzalez isn't among the focal points of the offense, he can continue developing
while taking steps toward a bigger role later in the year.
In a recent video from the VR Hoops YouTube channel, González was cited as being Boston's biggest breakout candidate for the upcoming season. The channel broke down what areas the sophomore forward can improve on, and where his opportunities could come from in the coming months. Of course, one of the biggest opportunities will be tertiary ball-handling with the second unit, especially on possessions where neither Jayson Tatum nor Derrick White are on the floor.
