In recent years, Payton Pritchard has proven himself to be a key member of the Boston Celtics rotation. He's a former Sixth Man of the Year and played an important role in Boston's run to the 2024 NBA Championship. Therefore, it's logical to believe the franchise will want to keep Pritchard around long-term. Brad Stevens will have the opportunity to do so, either in the coming weeks or next summer, as Pritchard recently became eligible for a multi-year contract extension.
Currently, there hasn't been much noise surrounding any negotiations involving Pritchard; however, that doesn't mean those conversations aren't taking place. With Jaylen Brown no longer on the Celtics roster, Pritchard is expected to step into an even larger role this season,
and given his three-level scoring ability, he will once again be a key member of the offense. Tying him down to an extension makes sense.
In a recent episode of the "Celtics Beat" podcast, hosts Adam Kaufman and Evan Valenti were joined by salary cap expert Keith Smith to discuss Pritchard's current contract situation. Interestingly, the potential for Pritchard to turn down an extension offer before negotiating a longer stay down the road was discussed as a possibility, especially as it could make financial sense for Pritchard to do so.
