Many NBA fans think of Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla as the mastermind behind the style of play that has become known as 'Mazzulla ball,' which tends to be thought of as launching as many shots from beyond the arc as possible. And while the 3-point shot has always figured prominently in Mazzulla's teams over the years, his coaching philosophy has been about getting the best possible shot and the most possible possessions, however they come, with his roster dictating the way that unfolds.
"I think last year was a perfect example of that," said the Celtics coach viaCLNS Media. "We went in with a defensive system, thinking that was good, and we were the worst rebounding team in the history of basketball. And so we had to change, and then
we became the best (rebounding) team. So, there's nothing fixed, You have some certain stuff that you want to get to, but we could say we know our team, but I don't know our team, and that's not a bad thing."
"Your team is going to change, and you have to be aware of those changes and build your system around what your team looks like," said Mazzulla, who sees himself as part of the process of finding the necessary chemistry.
"I would say I'm a part of that," he explained. "It's chemistry with coaching staff, players, the organization, the building. So I think it's not like, 'Oh, I'm on the outside of that or the staff is on the outside of that and the players are in there'; we're all together."
"Their new relationship with me and Paul (George) is new, me and Mike (Conley), me and (Mitchell Robinson), so it's all of us. And I think even if you don't have new players, if you brought the exact same team coming back, everyone is a different person, a different player, has had different experiences, so you have to do that again."
"I think it's just part of the natural progression," said Mazzulla.
